Genre Research: Horror

I researched the horror genre. While researching I learnt about the common lightings and mise-en-scene used. I also learnt about the common camera angles and movements. Horror films commonly use low, canted, high, and over the shoulder camera angles. Low camera angles are used to show the dominance of the villain in horror films while high camera angles are used to show how weak the victims are. Canted angles are used to dramatize the scenes and over the shoulder camera angles are used to build suspense for the horror film. The most common lighting used in horror films are three-point lightings and low lightings. Three point lightings are used so that the audience can see the full costume of the villain. Low lightings are used so that so villain can appear more frightening. Common camera movements that are used in horror films are zooming, tilt,  hand held, and tracking. Zooming camera movement is used to further dramatize the victims reaction in horror films. Handheld camera movements are used to make the scene appear more realistic. Tracking is used to make a scene more suspenseful towards the audience. Common mise-en-scenes used are settings, props, costumes, and acting. The settings of an horror film are usually in a dark and isolated place. The props that are used ae typically weapons such as knifes and swords. The villain is usually dressed in ripped clothing or distressed clothing that sometimes may be seen with fake blood. The villains act in a way where they appear careless and dangerous. Some examples of horror films are the movie 'US' which was released in 2019 and 'Jaws' which was released in 1975.  Another example is the 'Conjuring 2' which was released in 2016.
